There Goes Your Company’s Reputation

Today news travels fast, and if it’s bad news, real fast.

So, it’s probably not the best time for businesses to have things come out that can damage their reputation.

And that’s exactly what a serious accident can do.

In fact, I’ve seen firsthand how a serious accident that was not the company’s fault or the fault of the employee closed the company’s doors for good.

And I can tell you, this was a company that every employee would want to work for.

As if having an employee seriously injured or killed on the job isn’t bad enough, it’s a fact that a company’s reputation is on the line anytime there is a serious accident.

Think about it.

When a serious accident happens, in just minutes it can be up on social media with pictures, and the facts surrounding the accident are not necessarily all that important.

If the local news thinks the incident is big enough to cover, you might see it on the news at 5.

Then you have the OSHA investigation, which almost always ends with citations and penalties and possibly an interview with the OSHA Area Director explaining what they thought of the incident.

If that isn’t enough, those citations are available for everyone to see on OSHA’s website.

Last but not least, there are all those companies you’ve done work for over the years that see all the bad publicity your company is getting and decide they don’t really want to be a part of it.  Or they don’t think it’s worth the risk, so you are no longer on the bidders list.

You see, accidents in the workplace can be devastating not only the employee but also the company they work for. So it’s in everyone’s best interest to do everything they can to minimize the possibility of one taking place.

Employee QuickTip

When you think about it, a company’s reputation is also important to you, the employee.  If its reputation is bad because of accidents there’s a good chance they will be eliminated from bidding opportunities, which could lead to less or no work for you.  Plus no one wants to see anyone getting injured on the job.

Employer/Management QuickTip

Workplace accidents and injuries have a negative effect on a company in more ways than one. Often in ways that we may not even think about until it’s too late.
