Workplace Accidents Don’t Need Our Help
Ever walked down a sidewalk and out of nowhere you trip, sometimes landing on the ground? And yes, someone probably saw you do it.
Or have you walked down the stairs holding onto the handrail and you missed that last step, leaving your arm or knee feeling a little uncomfortable for a while?
And you might have even experienced climbing a ladder when your foot slipped, and you hit your knee or another part of your body leaving you a little bruised up.
In each of these situations you really did nothing to make the incident occur, but they just happened.
They are called accidents for a reason. As humans, we will continue to have them because there will always be something that we can’t or don’t see, someone else that we can’t control, or a situation that we could have never reasonably anticipated.
But there is absolutely no reason for us to help accidents along.
Think about it.
You’re walking while carrying an object or two that prevents you from seeing clearly where you are going and out of nowhere you trip. Unable to catch yourself because of everything you have in your hands, your injuries are more than just scrapes.
Or you’re walking down the stairs NOT holding the handrail and you miss the last step. You’re probably going to be a little more than just uncomfortable for a while.
And when you’re on that ladder and your foot slips and you’re not holding on to the ladder because you have your hands full . . . We probably don’t even want to think about that outcome.
No matter how hard we try, we’ll always have a few mishaps while working. With our help the consequences can be much worse.
Let’s not give accidents any help and keep them down to a band aid here and there.
