First, Take a Step Back…

Last week we talked about when it comes to a company’s future, production and workplace safety are equally important.

Because without production a company can’t pay its bills, pay employees and make a profit.

Without a safe workplace, employees get injured and production is interrupted, employees’ lives are affected (in a bad way) and the company incurs both direct and indirect costs associated with those accidents, making it difficult for the company to function and make a profit.

I would say that any good company has a handle on production, but many of those same companies struggle with workplace safety, specifically developing and implementing their company safety program.

So, if you’re looking for a way to develop and implement your company safety program, here are some ideas to help you get started.

First, take a step back, take a deep breath, and don’t panic. This really isn’t that difficult. Then look at what you are currently doing with safety.Do you have a complete written safety program that meets OSHA requirements and addresses the hazards that your employees are exposed to, including hazards created by other companies you are working with or beside?

Now look at how you are communicating that information to your employees.Do you provide things such as safety orientations to new employees, employee safety handbooks for review or safety meetings on a regular basis?

Next, do you perform regularly scheduled workplace safety inspections to ensure your employees are following safe work procedures?

And, last but not least, do you make sure your employees follow your workplace safety policies and procedures?

If you find that your company safety program is deficient, there are plenty of options out there today that will simplify the process of developing your company safety program.

If you are someone who likes to do things on your own, you can go online to Google or Bing and type in something like “Company Safety Program” and you can find just about anything you are looking for from information on how to write your own safety program to services like ours that will provide you a program that will meet both OSHA and your company specific safety requirements.

If you believe you will need a little more help with developing and implementing your safety program, you might try looking for a local safety consultant who will come to your location and walk you through the process.

Which ever way you feel most comfortable with, make sure to communicate exactly what you are trying to accomplish and don’t let anyone talk you into to something that you don’t believe will work for your company.
