How Much Do You Know?

As a safety consulting company each week we hear all sorts of questions regarding safety. Makes sense, right? But today I was thinking, if we had 50-100 employees in a room, how many could answer yes to the following short list of workplace safety-related questions?

Let’s see how you do.

Do you know:

  • •the location of fire extinguishers at your workplace and how to use them properly?
  • •the location of the first aid kits?
  • •what to do in case of an accident or a medical emergency?
  • •the means of notification, exit route and meeting place in case of an emergency evacuation?
  • •the location of the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) that apply to the chemical products you use and how to read them?
  • •the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) you are to be using?
  • •how to wear, store, and properly maintain the PPE you use?
  • •where your company keeps a copy of the safety program and what is in it?

Well, how did you do?

Did you answer yes to all 8 questions?

I hope so, but if you didn’t, now is the time to look for those answers. One of these days being able to answer yes to just one of these 8 questions could save your life or that of a fellow worker.

If you do know the answers to the above questions, you should be proud of yourself because you have obviously given thought to your personal safety and the safety of those with whom you work.

Of course, the above list is not all inclusive, and depending on the type of work you do, I’m sure you could come up with a more complete list of safety-related items that should be added to the list.

If you oversee your company’s safety program, I’d like to challenge you to get a group of your employees together this week and see how they do with this short list.

You may learn a lot about just how you are doing with the implementation of your safety program. If you get a chance, please let me know how your employees do.

Employee QuickTip

I understand that taking the time to understand how to protect yourself from hazards in the workplace isn’t the most exciting thing you have to do. In fact, it can be a real pain but never as painful as an injury because you didn’t know the answer.

Employer/Management QuickTip

With everything else you need to do to get the job done, managing workplace safety is downright tough. But think about how you would feel if someone got hurt on your job and you could have prevented it.
