How We Think About Workplace Safety
Imagine a workplace where safety just comes natural for everyone. Where management and employees work together to ensure everyone goes home at the end of the day, safe and sound.
That might exist in a safety director’s dreams, but not in the real world.
In the real world it’s more about management providing employees with safety information and having them sign off that they have read and understand the information.
And for the employee it’s more about signing what management provides with little or no interest in making sure that they have really read and understood the information.
Sound about right?
But just so you don’t get the wrong idea, I don’t believe that anyone wants to be or see an employee injured on the job.Who in their right mind would?
The problem is employees and management look at safety as just another workplace requirement and don’t see its real value. That leads to workplace accidents that could be easily prevented – accidents leading to serious injury or even death.
So, how do we change how we look at workplace safety?
That’s a tough one and it will take tough men and women who can stand up to long standing beliefs that get in the way.
They will need to stand up to the employee who says,“I‘ve done it this way for years and never been seriously injured,” management that says,“workplace safety is just common sense,” and the belief that safety equipment is for wimps and just slows down the job.
That will take some tough people. Are you one of them?
If you are, in the next few weeks we’ll talk about 4 Steps that will help simplify the process of implementing a real workplace safety program that is a win-win for the employer and employees.
I don’t think you’re going to want to miss this.
Employee QuickTip
Workplace safety is not for wimps. It’s for the tough men and women who are willing to standup to our current culture and say,“I have the right to a safe workplace free of recognizable hazards, and I will do my best to ensure that I, and those working with me, go home at the end of the day, safe and sound.”
Not everyone can do that. Can you?
Employer/Management QuickTip
