I’m Confused

So, you’ve been told you need a Safety Plan. You go online, and you find a Safety Program, a Safety Plan and a Health and Safety Program. Are they the same thing?

Yes, they are.

And then you’re asked to have Toolbox Talks. You go online and find Safety Meetings, Toolbox Talks, and Tailgate Meetings. Are they the same thing?

Yes, they are.

Now you’re being told you need to complete JHA’s (Job Hazard Analysis). You go online and find ASA’s, JHA’s, and JHSA’s. Are they the same thing?

For the most part, yes, but they may be formatted differently and contain more/less information than the others.

With all these names the safety industry has given to essentially the same things, how do you know what you need?

I’d like to give you an easy answer, but I can’t.

Although the job of the Safety and Health Industry is to help employers and employees better understand how to protect employees from hazards in the workplace, sometimes we confuse things with something as simple as another name for the same thing.

If you do find yourself in a situation where you are unsure of exactly what you need to meet a certain safety requirement, just ask.
