It Must Work For You

Last week we talked about the idea of forming an alliance that would bring everybody in the workplace together to prevent what none of us ever wants to see, an employee seriously injured on the job.

As we continue to look at the idea and how it might work, there is one important thing we must keep in mind.

That is, whatever you do – it must work for you!

As a safety consultant, I have my ideas on how to implement a workplace safety plan that I believe will help prevent employees from being seriously injured on the job.

But that may not work for you.

Why? Because you are not me and you may not be a safety consultant. You might be an employee, project manager, Safety Director, Owner, or anyone else with a specific role within a company.

As I mentioned last week, we all have our own reasons why we don’t want to see anyone get seriously injured at work, but we also have our own ideas on how we can make that happen.

That’s where it gets tricky because what works for me, may not work for you.

So, how do we get a bunch of people that have formed this Safety Alliance to work together without spinning our wheels?

You share your thoughts and ideas with the understanding that others may take a little from you and a little from a few others, mix it with their ideas and, voila, you have a plan that works for you.

You might be thinking, “That’s fine when you’re working with people outside your company, but what about when it comes to working with those within your company.”

Before you go challenging how others within your company are handling workplace safety, keep in mind the one thing we can all agree on – we don’t want an employee seriously injured on the job.

So, rather than asking why someone is handling workplace safety differently than you expected, why not ask yourself this – is what they are doing preventing serious accidents?

If so, maybe you could have them share their ideas with others who are struggling with your way, and maybe you’ll find that it works for them. Or they might put their own little spin on it so it works for them and everyone goes home at the end of the day, safe and sound.

If it’s not working, then let them know they need to do it your way until they can show you another way that works as well or better.

And always remember that we can almost always find a better way; we just have to willing to give new ideas a try.
