Just Take a Second or Two and Think About It

You’ve all read my tips about it, “It only takes a split second for an accident to happen.”

But today I want to talk about something related but from a different direction.

Since it only takes a split second for an accident to happen and we all know that it’s unlikely you’ll be able to do anything to prevent it, why don’t you try something new?

Before you decide to follow through with a poor decision that could jeopardize your safety, you just take a second or two and think about how it could end. Maybe with stitches or worse.

By doing so, you could eliminate at least one of the accidents caused by the poor descions we make regarding our safety.

Seems like a fairly simple soution to reducing up to 90% of all accidents, doesn’t it? I talked a little about that 90% of accidents last week.

The sad part is human nature gets in the way, and more often than not we’ll spend more time justifing why we can do it this way. Like “it will only take a minute,” or “I’ve done it 10 times before and nothing happened.”

Yes, we’ve all done it – even me! I did say it was human nature.

But I’d like to throw this challenge at everyone reading today.

Try this idea for a week and see how it works.

That’s right. When you know you are making a poor decision about your safety, just take a second or two to think about it, and then adjust how you perform the work so that it eliminates any potential hazards.

The outcome will be uneventful, but I guarantee you it will be in your best interest!

Employer/Management QuickTip

You’ve heard the phrase, “Anything worth doing is worth doing well.” Let’s adjust that to, “Anything worth doing is worth doing well and safely.” May not sound as good but it sure makes sense.
