Thinking back on my years of dealing with workplace accidents has left a lasting impression on me. These incidents have shown me firsthand just how personal workplace safety can be.

I remember the young roofer who fell to his death after warnings about strong winds were ignored. Then there was the worker who removed a guard from a machine and ended up with serious injuries and ongoing pain.

But it wasn’t just the workers who were affected. There was the nephew who lost his life while helping out on a roof job, leading to a painful call to a family member, and the son who was electrocuted due to a wiring mistake, leading to the breakup of his parents’ marriage.

I’ve seen how accidents have not only ended careers but also shut down businesses. From a high-pressure line test gone wrong, resulting in injuries, company closure, and loss of an owner’s life to a rushed job that ended in tragedy just before a holiday, it’s clear that neglecting safety can have devastating consequences.

These experiences have made one thing abundantly clear to me: Workplace safety isn’t just about following rules – it’s deeply personal. When safety measures are taken seriously, lives are protected, businesses thrive, and reputations remain intact. When safety is overlooked, the results can be catastrophic.

Take the personal aspect of safety to heart in your workplace. Remember, the safety of your employees, your company’s reputation, and your profits are at stake.
