Shocking, Isn’t It
Yes, 120 volts can kill you. It may seem relatively low compared to industrial settings, but it can be deadly if not handled properly.
So why do we take it for granted? We often neglect basic safety practices, such as:
- Not replacing the male ends of cords when the ground pin is broken off.
- Failing to remove damaged extension cords from service.
- Ignoring proper Lockout/Tagout Procedures.
- Running extension cords through puddled water.
- Not using GFCIs.
Rather than taking it for granted, let’s prioritize our safety and protect ourselves from these risks.
Here are a few protective measures you can take:
- Make sure you have proper training: Receive adequate training on electrical safety and understand the risks associated with electrical equipment.
- Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wear insulated gloves, safety glasses, and non-conductive footwear to protect against electric shock.
- Always follow proper Lockout/Tagout Procedures: Before working on electrical equipment, ensure the power source is properly locked out or tagged out to prevent accidental energization.
- Always test for Live Circuits: Assume all circuits are live until proven otherwise.
- Maintain a Safe Work Environment: Keep work areas clean and clear to avoid accidental contact with live electrical components.
When working with or around standard 120 volts, think about these safety measures. They could save your life.
Stay informed, stay vigilant, and prioritize your safety when it comes to electrical hazards.
