Safety E-Quick Tip

It’s Not Just About You or Me
Last week’s Safety E-QuickTip ended with this.
In past Safety E-QuickTips, I’ve discussed the 4 Steps to a Safer Workplace. These 4 steps are straight out of OSHA and, if implemented, they would definitely prevent accidents and OSHA citations, reduce insurance costs, and even help you with prequalification requirements (with a few tweaks here and there).
The 4 Steps are:
- Establish Safety Policies and Procedures – Develop a Safety Program
- Effectively Communicate your Policies and Procedures – Provide Training
- Perform Regular and Frequent Workplace Safety Inspections
- Enforce Safety
These 4 steps are simple and to the point – but they don’t work.
How do I know that?
Because we’ve been talking about them for years and to date, I’ve never seen a company that has ever implemented the 4 steps and maintained them for even 1 full year.
Well, that was last week, and this is today.
You have 4 of what look to be simple steps that, if implemented, would prevent accidents and OSHA citations, reduce insurance costs, and even help you with prequalification requirements, but implementing all 4 always seems just out of reach.
But without all 4, you can’t get the results you’re looking for and need, so eventually they get pushed aside and it’s back to doing it the same old way.
They are 4 simple steps. What makes them so difficult to implement?
Well, just because they are simple, that doesn’t make them easy.
And what always gets in the way? CHANGE. That dreaded word that no one wants to hear.
And to make things worse, it’s not just you that needs to be onboard with the change – you need upper management, middle management, and your employees.
Not an easy task, but doable if everyone takes into considerations of what is at stake. Protecting your company’s most valuable assets – Employees, Reputation and Profits.
I’ll leave you with that and we’ll get into this deeper next week.
Take a minute each day to think about one thing you can do to help ensure you go home at the end of the workday in the same physical condition that you arrived.
You can choose to fight or embrace change when it comes to workplace safety and compliance. Both might make you feel pretty good about yourself, but only one will provide the return on investment you’re looking for.
