Today’s Safety Program Is More Than…

What do a Safety Program, Safety Manual, Safety Plan, Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) and Health and Safety Manual have in common?

They are all the same thing with different names.

And without one, it’s almost impossible for a company to develop and implement workplace safety and compliance.

The key to a good Safety Program is that it contains all a company’s safety policies and procedures and it’s accessible for reference to employers and their employees.

It will provide answers regarding:

  • The company’s policies on safety
  • Potential workplace hazards
  • How to protect employees form hazards in the workplace
  • Safety training employees should receive
  • And the list goes on

Safety Programs in the past were usually bulky binders that sat on a shelf collecting dust after they were created. But today with laptops, tablets and cell phones most can be accessed at a touch of a button, making them more valuable than ever.

It’s important that a company’s safety program is kept up to date and safety issues are relevant to the hazards created by the work the company performs, as well as hazards employees may be exposed to that are created by others, such as different trade contractors on the same project.

It’s also important that management and employees know how to access a company’s safety program so it can be used as the valuable reference manual it is.

Yes, today’s Safety Program is more than the Safety Program binder that collected dust on the shelf. It provides real time access to workplace safety information that will help prevent workplace accidents – protecting a company’s most valuable assets: Employees, Company Reputation and Profits.

Employee QuickTip

If you have a safety concern or see a hazard that needs corrected, contact your supervisor so they can make the necessary corrections. Workplace safety is everyone’s job – Including yours!

Employer/Management QuickTip

OSHA “requires employers to provide their employees with a workplace free from recognized hazards likely to cause death or serious physical harm.”

So, when you are developing or updating your company Safety Program, don’t forget to include possible hazards created by others as I pointed out above.

DON’T FORGET: It’s that time of year when many employers with more than 10 employees are required to complete OSHA 300 Logs and some are required to electronically submit their records.

Get a free Fillable PDF 300 Log with instructions and Excel OSHA 300 Log templates. The 2020-OSHA300 Summary of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses must be posted at your workplace from February 1st through April 30th, 2021. If you are required to electronically file your 2020-300A report, the information must be uploaded by March 2nd, 2021.
