Top 5 Excuses for Not Implementing a Company Safety Program
For years I’ve heard every excuse for why companies haven’t implemented a company safety program yet.
That was until it was too late.
- We don’t have the time. Everyone is stretched too thin, adding on implementing a company safety program can’t happen.
- It costs too much. It’s not just the cost of the program, it’s all the man hours it will take to get it implemented.
- We’ve never had any serious injuries. We’ve been in business for years and no one has ever been seriously injured.
- Safety is just common sense. Everyone knows what they are doing and the hazards they need to protect themselves from.
- We started to implement a safety program then stopped. After our program was up and running a while, management realized we were experiencing less injuries, so we didn’t think we needed to continue.
Each of these reasons I’ve heard time and time again over the years, many of them after a company experienced an accident that led to serious injuries or a fatality and sometimes leading to costly OSHA citations.
Although I’ve heard several other excuses, these 5 are the ones that I’ve heard most often.
Any sound familiar?
I know it’s tough to get a company safety program up and running with everything else management must deal with but consider the cost of just one serious accident.
One serious accident and your company can experience significant financial losses, including medical expenses, legal fees, lost productivity, increased Workers Compensation costs, OSHA citations and penalties, and damage to your company reputation.
And that’s just one serious accident.
Don’t let a few excuses get in the way of your company’s future.
