What Are the Odds

For 2019 and 2020, the total number of injuries has remained the same at 2.8 per 100 full time employees.

If that rate were to continue for 2021, that means the odds of you being injured on the job are 1 in 40.

Now let’s compare this against a few other odds:

  • ·Odds of being audited – 1 in 175
  • ·Odds of being struck by lightning in any given year – 1 in 500,000
  • ·Odds of becoming a movie star – 1 in 1.5 million
  • ·Odds of winning the Powerball jackpot – 1 in 292.2 million

Think about this for a minute.

Something many people fear, getting audited, is more than 4 times less likely to happen than you being injured on the job.

And something that your local weather person and weather channels talk about protecting yourself from on a regular basis, being struck by lightning, is 12,500 times less likely to happen than you being injured on the job.

And something that many people dream about becoming, a movie star, is 37,500 times less likely to happen than you being injured on the job.

And last but not least, something that people are willing to spend their last 2 dollars on, a Powerball ticket, is 7,305,000 times less likely to be a winner than you being injured on the job.

Why is it that we talk more and seem to care more about 4 other things than something that has a far greater chance of happening and could have a severe impact on your life?

Does anyone have an answer for that? I don’t.
