What’s More Important?

Option 1 – How many hours a company spends on workplace safety and compliance.

Option 2 – That employees can recognize hazards in the workplace, understand how to protect themselves from those hazards, and do what is necessary to protect themselves from those hazards.

That’s a no brainer, right? The answer is Option 2.

So why is it that when companies implement a workplace safety and compliance program, they always seem to spend more time on the process and less on the outcome.

Think about it.

Time is spent developing the Safety Program that looks impressive but fails to address the daily hazards employees are exposed to. Hours of training are scheduled with little or no focus on specific hazards employees are exposed to. Finally, documentation of the company’s efforts is what people focus on when setting up any workplace safety and compliance program.

Now, don’t get me wrong, having a comprehensive safety program, safety training, and documentation are must haves, but the focus of your program must always be about preventing employee exposure to hazards in the workplace for it to have any real value.

So, next time you start talking about workplace safety and compliance, keep your focus on the here and now rather than the long-term. Everyone will benefit.
