When Employers Provide Safety Training – Everyone Wins

One of the best ways to prevent accidents in the workplace is to make sure everyone is aware of potential hazards and how to protect themselves from those hazards.

That’s where safety training comes in.

There are several ways to provide employee safety training – Safety Meetings (also known as Toolbox Talks, Tailgate Meetings, Safety Briefings, Safety Pep Talks and Safety Moments), Employee Safety Handbooks and more comprehensive training such as Fall Protection, Hazard Communication or Safety Orientation Training that takes place online or in a classroom setting and may include a quiz or test.

Let talk a little more about Safety Meetings.

Safety Meetings take place on a more regular basis and provide continued awareness of specific hazards based on the current work employees are performing.

These meetings normally take place where the work is being performed and employers may review the same hazards over and over again, making them very effective at preventing accidents.

Employee Safety Handbooks are another quick and easy way for employees to learn about the hazards they may encounter along with the company’s policies and procedures they will need follow. Copies of the handbook are often provided to employees when they are hired.

Other more comprehensive training should be provided as deemed necessary by the employer and as required by OSHA to ensure employees have a complete understanding of the hazards they face in their line of work.

Understanding how to prevent hazards in the workplace is a critical part of keeping you and those working with you safe.

When your employer takes the time to put on safety meetings or provides you any other form of safety training, please take it seriously, listen carefully and then use that information to protect yourself and those working with you.

When it comes to safety meetings, we recommend that your meetings are no longer that 5-10 minutes in length. The advantages to a short meeting are that 1) you keep your employees focused on one specific safety hazard topic that’s relevant to the work being performed and 2) it doesn’t take much time out of the workday.

When providing employees safety training ALWAYS document the training with a sign-in sheet or a certificate.

DON’T FORGET: It’s that time of year when many employers with more than 10 employees are required to complete OSHA 300 Logs and some are required to electronically submit their records.

Get a free Fillable PDF 300 Log with instructions and Excel OSHA 300 Log templates. The 2020-OSHA300 Summary of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses must be posted at your workplace from February 1st through April 30th, 2021. If you are required to electronically file your 2020-300A report, the information must be uploaded by March 2nd, 2021.
