With or Without OSHA

There’s a lot of talk about OSHA possibly becoming a thing of the past. The word on the street is the new administration is looking at putting it on the chopping block.

What does that mean for safety in the workplace should that happen.

That would only mean that the government wouldn’t be checking up on a few companies every day like yours to see if you are performing work safely and in accordance with their regulations, there would no longer be OSHA citations and penalties, and there would be no new safety regulations.

But in the end, would it really change anything?

The bar has been set and let’s face it, there are many more important reasons why safety in the workplace should always be a priority.

To name a few:

  • Losing an employee to a workplace accident for any amount of time today is costly. Companies are struggling more than ever to find good employees who have the necessary experience to get the job done. What would it cost you?
  • Increased liability and workers compensation insurance costs due to accidents in the workplace cost businesses thousands of dollars. I’ve seen businesses go out of business because of those costs. Could you afford that?
  • Then there are those safety bidding requirements that many companies you want to perform work for are putting in place because they understand the value of safety and aren’t willing to compromise.  In fact, many have requirements that exceed OSHA regulations. Do you think they are going to turn back the hands of time just because OSHA is gone?
  • Last reason, I promise. Litigation – lawsuits. They cost a lot of money and take a lot of time. Precedent has been set, so businesses will still have to do what is reasonable to meet the bar.

Workplace safety is all about you, your employees and your company.  No more, no less.

No company can get their work done without employees and no employee can go to work without a company to work for.  We’re all in this together – with or without OSHA.
