Memorable – Leaving Us Speechless
As a safety consultant, I’ve had three memorable experiences that left me nearly speechless—hard to believe for those who know me!
The first was with a company I represented during an OSHA inspection following a serious accident. They had a history of reportable incidents but were shocked to learn that their negligence would lead to citations and penalties.
Part of their settlement required them to implement a safety program, which they grudgingly agreed to. They had to file quarterly reports on their progress, conduct jobsite inspections, hold weekly safety meetings, provide training on hazard exposures, and submit their OSHA 300 Log for three years.
Additionally, a safety consultant (me) had to review their program and submit two reports on their progress.
You’d think that after years of accidents costing them thousands in worker compensation payments, they’d understand the value of safety.
But after a year of reduced accidents, a successful OSHA visit with no citations, and an Experience Modification Rate (EMR) dropping below 1 for the first time, they declared they no longer needed a safety program.
Speechless, we happily discontinued our services and walked away, feeling relieved to be free from the constant struggle of getting them to comply with their OSHA agreement. Working with them had been an uphill battle; despite their improvements, they never grasped the true value of safety. Their reluctance to embrace a proactive safety culture made it clear that they were not ready to prioritize safety as a core value.
After our departure, we were left unsure of what happened to the company afterward but based on the challenges we faced throughout the year, we doubt they maintained the processes we had worked so hard to implement.
