Transforming Workplace Safety: A Step-by-Step Approach to Protecting Your Most Valuable Assets

When it comes to safety, numbers can tell you a lot.

Like:

  • The number of recordable accidents in a year: This shows how many times your employees have been hurt, which can indicate how seriously you take safety.
  • Your Experience Modification Rate (EMR): This shows how your safety record compares to other companies in your industry. If your number is low, it shows you’re taking safety seriously.
  • The cost of Liability Insurance: This shows how much risk you’re facing, which can indicate how seriously you’re taking safety.
  • The cost of Workers’ Compensation: This shows how much you’re paying for accidents. If you’re paying a lot, it shows you need to do a better job with safety.
  • The number of lost workdays: This shows how serious an accident is. If you have a lot of lost workdays, it can indicate that you need to do a better job with safety.

Yes, numbers can tell you a lot – but rarely will those numbers convince anyone to change.

And that’s where we are with workplace safety today. Stuck looking at numbers that don’t motivate us to change.

We all know safety is necessary, especially today with a diminished workforce and rising costs.

But with fewer people, we have more to do and less time to get it done. With increased costs, we have more reason to try to increase production to offset those high costs.

Where does that leave safety? Safety that protects employees, company reputations, and profits.

Right where it’s always been: necessary but difficult, sometimes even seeming impossible to achieve.

Something needs to change.

For you, the employee who depends on your physical health to support your family.

For the managers and superintendents responsible for ensuring that work gets done and employees go home in the same condition they came to work.

For the owners responsible for keeping the doors open, employees working, and making a profit.

Maybe it’s time to change how we look at safety.

Instead of focusing on what isn’t working, let’s concentrate on what is and build off that—step by step!

That’s right, one step at a time, building off what works!

Sound like a plan you could get behind?

If so, stay tuned because we’re just getting started!
