One Observation Can Make a Difference

Quick Note Before We Begin

Many workplace improvements begin long before an injury, incident, or near miss occurs.

More often, they start with a simple observation made by someone who notices something that could become a problem and decides to mention it.

The Problem: Thinking a Concern Is Too Small

Employees sometimes hesitate to report concerns because the issue appears minor.

They may assume the problem is not serious enough to mention or believe someone else has already noticed it.

Unfortunately, many hazards remain uncorrected because everyone assumes someone else will act.

A Small Detail Gets Attention

During a routine workday, an employee notices 2 extension cords showing signs of wear.

The cords are still functioning properly, and no one has been injured.

Instead of ignoring the issue, the employee reports the concern.

The cords are inspected and replaced before further deterioration occurs.

What appeared to be a minor observation created an opportunity to eliminate risk before an incident became possible.

The Solution: Pay Attention to Small Changes

Conditions often change gradually.

Equipment wears down. Housekeeping slips. Work areas become cluttered.

Employees who notice these changes early provide valuable opportunities for improvement.

The Switch: From Watching to Contributing

Observation alone is helpful.

Sharing observations creates positive change.

Many safety improvements begin because someone chose to speak up about something that appeared small.

Management QuickTip

Treat employee observations as valuable information, even when no immediate hazard exists.

Employee QuickTip

If you notice a condition that could become a problem later, report it today.

October Reminder

Leaves, moisture, and cooler temperatures can create slip hazards around entrances, sidewalks, parking areas, and outdoor work locations.
