Better Outcomes Often Start Earlier Than We Think
Quick Note Before We Begin
When an incident occurs, attention is often focused on the moment the event happened. However, workplace outcomes are usually influenced by decisions that were made, actions that were taken, and conversations about hazards, risks, or concerns that either occurred or never took place long before the result became visible.
The Problem: Focusing Only on Results
Most organizations track injuries, incidents, property damage, and other losses. These measurements are important because they help identify trends and evaluate performance. The challenge is that they only tell us what happened, not everything that contributed to the outcome.
Many of the actions that influence workplace safety occur days, weeks, or even months before an incident ever takes place. When we focus primarily on results, we can overlook the everyday behaviors, decisions, and improvements that are quietly shaping those results. By the time an incident occurs, many opportunities to influence the outcome have already come and gone.
The Incident That Never Happened
Imagine an employee notices a housekeeping issue that could create a slip, trip, or fall hazard. Rather than walking past it, they report the concern. A supervisor follows up to make sure the issue is corrected, and management supports the effort by providing the necessary resources.
Afterward, nothing happens.
No one gets hurt. No equipment is damaged. No incident report needs to be completed.
Because there was no negative outcome, those actions may receive very little attention. Yet the employee who spoke up, the supervisor who responded, and the management team that supported the correction all played a role in preventing a potential problem. The successful outcome wasn’t luck. It was the result of people taking action before an incident had the chance to occur.
The Solution: Focus on Actions That Lead to Success
Communication, awareness, observation, and follow-through help shape workplace outcomes long before incidents occur. The more consistently these actions take place, the greater the opportunity to prevent injuries, reduce risk, and improve overall performance.
The Switch: From Measuring Results to Influencing Results
The safest organizations understand that positive outcomes rarely happen by accident. They are often the result of hundreds of small actions taken by employees, supervisors, managers, and owners every day. When organizations recognize and reinforce those actions, they create a culture that influences safer outcomes before problems develop.
Management QuickTip
Recognize proactive actions that help prevent incidents, not just the absence of incidents themselves.
Employee QuickTip
Never underestimate the value of a small action that helps improve safety for everyone.
October Reminder
As winter approaches, review walking surfaces, lighting conditions, weather preparations, and housekeeping practices that may be affected by colder temperatures.
