He Was Quite a Guy

Here’s a timeless reminder that is worth repeating.

He was truly a remarkable guy – selfless, reliable, and always willing to lend a hand. He never shied away from a tough job and was always the first to volunteer for tasks that others avoided.

I remember the countless times he narrowly escaped danger. One time, when he was sliding down a 12-pitch roof, he managed to catch himself just in time, preventing a 24-foot fall onto a concrete slab below.

There was also that time when we forgot to bring the extension ladder to fix a piece of trim on the side of a building. With quick thinking, he used the top of a 10-foot step ladder to fix the problem and save us from having to come back. However, as he was descending, the ladder kicked out from underneath him, leaving him precariously hanging on a ledge.

Fortunately, we were able to get the ladder back in place just in time.

Despite all these close calls, he never once sustained an injury on the job – not even a scratch. However, it makes me wonder if he had life insurance, and how his wife and two kids are going to get by without him.

The truth is, workplace accidents can happen when you least expect it, and they’re not always survivable. However, there is a way to mitigate the risk – by paying attention to near-miss incidents.

As we go about our work, we often experience narrow escapes, and utter phrases like, “Got lucky that time,” or “That was close.” However, these are warnings that we must listen to, learn from, and share with coworkers.

By taking the time to carefully review what went wrong during a near-miss situation, we can learn from our mistakes and take steps to prevent accidents from happening in the future.

Workplace accidents are preventable, but only if we all do our part to remain vigilant and take action to keep ourselves and our coworkers safe.

Employee QuickTip

We make a lot of choices in our life, some good and some bad. When it comes to your safety and those working with you, it pays to make good safety choices, even if it is a little inconvenient.

Employer/Management QuickTip

Making sure employees have the right tools to get the job done safely goes a long way towards keeping them safe. No one should have to be the hero and save the day by standing on the top of a step ladder to complete the job just because the right size ladder wasn’t available to do the job safely.
