It May Only Take a Minute – But Accidents Take Less Than a Second!

OWYN Safety E-QuickTip: It will Only Take a Minute

Let’s talk about a common excuse that often leads to dangerous situations in the workplace. I’m sure you’ve heard it before: “It will only take a minute, so why bother with all those safety measures?”

Well, I’m here to tell you that those minutes can turn into life-altering seconds if we don’t take safety seriously.

Think about it. You’ve probably heard stories about someone going into a trench for “just a minute” without proper shoring, only to have the walls collapse and tragically take their life. It’s a chilling reminder that even a short amount of time can have dire consequences.

Or what about the person who hopped onto an aerial lift to change a light bulb without wearing a harness and tying off to the bucket? They probably thought, “What are the odds of something happening in just a minute?”

Well, unfortunately, they ended up falling 20 feet to the ground below. A minute can change everything.

And let’s not forget the one who skipped putting the guard on a machine because it would take longer than the task itself. They thought, “Eh, nothing will happen in that short amount of time.”

Yet, they ended up losing a hand that day. Our bodies aren’t invincible, and injuries can happen in a split second.

So, here’s the thing. I get it, time is precious, and it’s tempting to cut corners when you’re on a tight schedule. But let me remind you that accidents don’t need our help. They can happen in an instant, without warning. And when we neglect safety measures, we’re essentially rolling the dice with our lives and the lives of those around us.

Let’s break the “It will only take a minute” mindset. Instead, let’s prioritize safety and make it a non-negotiable part of our work routine. Remember, it may only take a minute, but accidents can happen in seconds.
