Look Around – Hazards are Staring You Right in the Face
Imagine this: hazards lurk around every corner at work, waiting to strike and put you in harm’s way.
For instance, picture yourself in the shop – what do you see?
- An old, tattered extension cord that’s been snaking across the floor for months, weaving dangerously through a puddle of water.
- Joe, an experienced operator who speeds around blind corners, narrowly avoiding accidents and then talking about what a great operator he is.
- A machine guard laying up against a piece of equipment that was meant to protect the user from being pulled in, creating a potential amputation situation.
Or you’re out on a jobsite – what do you see?
- A scaffolding setup outside a building next to an old worn-out, incoming electric service line that is creating a serious electrical shock hazard.
- A 6’ deep trench without protection, weakened by rain and unstable walls.
- A broken ladder held together with a makeshift 2X4.
The truth is, hazards are relentless – they are all around us, waiting to catch us off guard.
Before starting work or as your day progresses, take a moment to scan your surroundings. Being vigilant not only safeguards your well-being but also protects those around you.
This may be one of my shortest QuickTips ever. So why don’t you read it one more time – it could just save your life one day.
