Maximizing Workplace Safety: Combining Common Sense with a Little Know-how

What do you get when you put a little common sense with a little know-how?

A Safer Workplace.

Everyone has been saying it for years – workplace safety is just common sense.

Well, we got half of it right.

But think about it. If you combine common sense with the knowledge of the hazards you will be exposed to while working today and how you can protect yourself from those hazards, you’ll ensure you go home at the end of the day – safe and sound.

Common sense will protect you from yourself by making sure you think about the hazards you are exposed to today, you have the proper tools and safety gear to get the job done safely, and you don’t say, “I’ve done it this way for the past X years, and nothing has happened to me yet.”

As for the know-how, to protect yourself you need to understand the hazards you’ll be exposed to and know how to protect yourself from those hazards.

That takes safety training and a continued awareness of hazards in the workplace to keep it fresh on your mind.

Here are some ways to help make that happen in a time efficient way:

  • Online or in person safety training to help you really understand a wide variety of hazards, such as those associated with chemicals, falls, excavation hazards, hazards associated with energized equipment during maintenance and repair, and more.
  • Safety Meetings/Toolbox Talks or Tailgate Meetings are a great way to keep up to date on hazards in just 5 minutes or so.
  • Safety Handbooks that provide an overview of your safety manual are also a great tool in providing continued awareness.
  • And let’s not forget that safety manual, a great resource that can provide more detailed information on hazards in the workplace and how you can protect yourself and those working with you.

So, with a little bit of common sense and a little know-how, you and those working with you can stay safe and sound.

Employee QuickTip

Forget saying, “I’ve done it this way for the past X years, and I’ve never been hurt.” Try this for a week and repeat. When it comes to workplace safety, combine common sense and a little know-how. I promise it’s in your best interest.

Employer/Management QuickTip

You could rely on just common sense, but we all know how that’ll turn out.  So why don’t you combine it with a little know-how?  It will go a long way in protecting your employees, company reputation, and profits.
