Sometimes We Just Need to be Reminded 

Most people forget about workplace safety until they experience an accident. 

 A young man comes to visit his uncle for the summer. His uncle works in construction, and the boy will be working with him during his stay.

One day, they’re doing some repair work on the roof of a machine shop when the worst thing possible happens.

The roof was flat and just 8’ off the ground. They had been working on it for a while, walking back and forth, in and around an unprotected skylight. The job was only going to take a few hours to complete. Then, in an instant, the boy fell through the skylight. His uncle ran over to see what had happened, only to see his nephew draped over a piece of equipment, lifeless. 

Sometimes we forget why workplace safety is so important, and it takes a little reminder to open those wounds again, so we see its value.

Although this real-life story is more than 10 years old, it still opens old wounds, helping each of us to remember the real value of workplace safety. 

This story serves as a reminder that workplace safety is not just a box to check. It’s a critical part of our daily lives that can mean the difference between life and death.

We need to take safety seriously every day, and we need to remind each other why it’s so important. 

Safety is something we need to be reminded of regularly, so we don’t become complacent.

We must remember that safety is a priority every day.  If you have a safety meeting, share this story with your team and discuss how it applies to your workplace.  It may save a life.
