Sometimes We Just Need to be Reminded

Remember the proverb, “Time heals all wounds?”

What does that mean?

It is said that it means negative feelings eventually fade away.

Well, when it comes to workplace safety, truer words have never been spoken.

You see, serious workplace accidents happen every day throughout the U.S., but in most cases, they are far and few between on a local basis, providing each of us time to forget all those negative feelings we experienced.

That is, until the next serious accident.

A young man comes to visit his uncle for the summer. His uncle is in construction and he going to be working with him during his stay.

They’re doing some repair work on the roof of a machine shop one day when the worst thing you possibly imagine happens.

The one section of the roof they were working on at the time was flat and just 8’ off the ground. They had been working on it for a while, walking back and forth, in and around an unprotected skylight.

The job they were doing was a small repair job that was only going to take a few hours to complete.

Then, in an instant the boy fell through the skylight.

His uncle ran over to see what had happened only to see his nephew draped over a piece of equipment, lifeless.

You see, sometimes we forget why workplace safety is so important and it takes a little reminder to open those wounds again, so we see its value.

Although this real-life story is more than 10 years old, it still opens old wounds, helping each of us to remember the real value of workplace safety.
