Speaking Up Prevents Accidents
Quick Note Before We Begin
Every Monday morning, OWYN Safety delivers a short safety message designed to help both management and employees start the week focused on safer work practices.
A few minutes spent thinking about safety today can prevent problems later this week.
Thank you for making safety part of your workday.
Speaking Up Prevents Accidents
The Problem: Staying Silent About Hazards
Many workplace incidents occur because someone noticed a problem but didn’t say anything.
Employees may worry about being viewed as complainers. Supervisors may assume someone else will address the issue. Others may simply believe the hazard isn’t serious enough to mention.
Unfortunately, hazards rarely improve on their own. Small concerns often become larger problems when nobody speaks up.
A safety concern shared early can prevent an injury later.
The Solution: Create a Culture of Communication
Strong safety cultures encourage open communication from everyone, regardless of title or experience level.
When people feel comfortable raising concerns, hazards are identified sooner and corrected faster.
Speaking up should be viewed as contributing to the company’s success, not creating problems.
The Switch: From Silence to Action
The safest workplaces are not those with the fewest hazards. They are the workplaces where people feel comfortable discussing hazards openly.
When concerns are shared and addressed promptly, everyone benefits.
Management QuickTip
Thank employees who identify concerns. A positive response today increases the likelihood that hazards will be reported tomorrow.
Employee QuickTip
If something doesn’t look safe, say something. Speaking up protects both you and your coworkers.
August Heat Reminder
August temperatures can place added stress on the body, especially during physical work. Drink water throughout the day rather than waiting until you’re thirsty and encourage coworkers to do the same.
