Here’s Something We Can All Agree On

Workplace safety should never cost anyone an arm and a leg.

Didn’t I say we could all agree?

But although we all agree – it’s much too often the case!

Accidents that could have easily been avoided happen every day.

We’ve all seen it.

The person standing on the top rung of a stepladder and then they’re on the floor.

Then there’s the one where someone removes a guard from a saw just for a minute.  Well, it may not have been an arm or a leg but maybe a finger or 2.

Go ahead, think about a couple you’ve seen or possibly experienced for yourself. Did those accidents really have to happen?

Probably not.

Now it’s time for employers to do a little thinking.

Let’s think about that group safety training you had an outside safety company put on one Saturday for all your employees. That cost more than you were planning and did your employees really get everything they needed to protect themselves from hazards in the workplace?

Or that Safety Management System that you paid thousands of dollars for, and you still don’t have it implemented.

Then there was that OSHA 10- and 30-hour training you thought everyone needed to go through. Consider the time and the cost.

Yes, we can all agree that workplace safety and compliance should never cost anyone an arm and a leg.  Instead of throwing together an idea or 2 that will cost money and hoping it will work, there is a better way.

A way where you come up with a plan that includes a little Common Sense and Know-how that we talked about last week, while keeping the cost and time spent in check.

What would that plan look like for your company?

Whatever the plan, make sure it is one that you can put in place and keep it going so safety never costs anyone an arm and a leg.

We’ll give you a sample plan next week that we believe will work for pretty much every company.

Think about what you would do without one of your arms or legs next time you think about shortcutting safety.

Putting a good workplace safety and compliance program in place will cost money.  In the end it should save money if you do it right!
